The Beauty of Cape Cod Comes at a High Cost

Cape Cod boasts breathtaking coastal scenery and a vibrant community, but the cost of living remains well above the national average.

As of 2025, the region’s cost of living index sits at 131.5, driven primarily by soaring housing costs.

Barnstable County’s median single-family home price reached $802,500 in July 2025, putting homeownership out of reach for many.

Chatham’s median home price was even higher at $1,050,000 in 2023, requiring a household income far beyond the local median of $86,674.

Rental options remain scarce and expensive, with monthly rates often stretching from $1,800 to $3,500.

High utility bills, pricey groceries, and transportation costs further strain budgets, especially with limited public transit and costly island ferries.

Local leaders are pursuing solutions, including a Regional Housing Strategy and proposed real estate transfer fees, to address escalating affordability challenges.

Anyone considering Cape Cod must weigh its unique lifestyle against substantial living expenses.

Cape Cod's Iconic Bridges Set for Transformation Amidst Community Engagement

Cape Cod’s scenic charm continues to draw visitors, but the aging Sagamore and Bourne bridges have become a critical concern for the region.

Built in 1935, these essential connections to the mainland are now considered functionally obsolete, prompting a comprehensive plan for their replacement.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has advanced this effort by filing a Draft Environmental Impact Report, launching a period for public feedback open until October 24, 2025.

New bridge designs propose wider lanes, improved interchanges, modern pedestrian and bicycle amenities, and a twin-network tied arch look that preserves the familiar Cape Cod silhouette.

Safety is a priority with piers positioned outside navigation channels, reducing collision risks.

Backed by nearly $1.72 billion in federal and $700 million in state funds, construction will begin with the Sagamore Bridge by 2028, keeping the region’s lifelines intact during the build.

Active community engagement remains essential as Cape Cod prepares for a new era in transportation.

Cape Cod's September Fishing: Albies, Bonito, and Tautog Action

September has brought an energetic fishing scene to Cape Cod, especially around Falmouth, Woods Hole, and the Elizabeth Islands.

Anglers are encountering a lively mix of false albacore, bonito, and tautog. Albies have proven tricky to track this week, darting through shallow waters of western Nantucket Sound, north of Martha’s Vineyard, and the sound side of the islands.

Bonito are still plentiful near Woods Hole and off the Vineyard’s north beaches, sometimes mingling with bluefish and the occasional sea bass.

Striped bass action is ramping up, with South Cape surfcasters and Elizabeth Islands boaters landing both smaller and larger fish. Tautog activity has surged, especially around the islands and Woods Hole, with chumming green crab legs proving successful in jumpstarting the bite.

The Cape Cod Canal is buzzing with bonito, bluefish, and big striped bass—early mornings are yielding strong catches as baitfish and squid draw in predators.

The ever-changing conditions keep anglers alert and hopeful for new opportunities on the water.

The autumn allure of Cape Cod shines through its peaceful beaches and striking sunsets, offering a calm escape as the summer crowds thin.

With lifeguard services ending for the season, visitors must be especially vigilant to ocean dangers.

Rare Flesh-Eating Bacteria Case Reported at Falmouth's Old Silver Beach

Health officials have identified a rare Vibrio vulnificus infection in an older swimmer at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

The case emerged after an August 8 swim with an open wound, leading to swift local and state health response.

Despite this, there are no current advisories or closures at Old Silver Beach.

This marine bacterium thrives in warm coastal waters and typically poses little risk, but can cause severe illness if it enters the body via cuts or scrapes.

People with diabetes, liver conditions, or weakened immune systems face elevated risks and should exercise caution when entering the ocean.

Officials urge residents to cover wounds with waterproof bandages and promptly wash any accidental exposures.

Symptoms can quickly worsen, so seek immediate medical care for fever or skin lesions after swimming.

Local health authorities continue to provide guidance to help everyone enjoy Cape Cod safely.

Cape Cod's Resilience Amidst Drought and Market Shifts

Cape Cod is grappling with a Level 2 drought as of August 2025, spotlighting the region’s climate vulnerability.

Despite these environmental pressures, the local real estate market remains strong, with January’s median single-family home price rising 7.2% to $745,000.

However, fewer than 115 homes are listed below this median, raising affordability concerns for many.

Complicating matters, a severe late-season nor’easter in May brought flooding to towns like Plymouth and left more than 15,000 residents without power.

These back-to-back weather disruptions underscore Cape Cod’s susceptibility to extreme conditions.

Looking ahead, strong property demand is expected to continue, though rising interest rates and economic shifts could influence market trends.

Through it all, Cape Cod’s natural allure and resilient community spirit continue to draw both residents and visitors.
