Cape Cod National Seashore Faces Closures Amid Federal Shutdown |
Community Urged to Assist in Maintaining Park's Beauty |
The Cape Cod National Seashore is experiencing significant operational disruptions due to the ongoing federal shutdown, now in its eighth day.
With most employees furloughed, essential services and programs are suspended, and visitor centers remain closed.
However, the park's beaches and public areas are still accessible to visitors.
Public restrooms adjacent to the parking lot at Salt Pond Visitor Center and vault toilets at Herring Cove Beach and Beech Forest Trail are operational.
The Oversand Vehicle Corridor is open through November 15, pending weather and tide conditions, but only to vehicles with valid permits, as new permits are not being issued during the shutdown.
Facilities managed by partners, such as the Payomet Performing Arts Center, Highland Light tours, and the Highland Links Golf Course, continue their scheduled activities.
Despite these openings, the absence of park staff means that critical behind-the-scenes work by archaeologists, ecologists, and historians is on hold.
This pause affects ongoing studies on erosion and the preservation of the park's rich 6,000-year history.
In light of these challenges, the community is encouraged to help maintain the park's cleanliness.
Visitors are asked to bring large garbage bags and collect any trash they encounter, disposing of it at their local transfer stations.
During previous shutdowns, unemptied bins led to overflowing trash being scattered by the wind.
Law enforcement officers remain on duty, and park rules are still in effect.
Any instances of vandalism or destructive behavior should be reported to National Park Service Dispatch at 617-242-5659.
By working together, the community can help preserve the beauty of Cape Cod's beaches during this challenging time. |
